Google Chrome for Mac and Linux is Now available

December 9th, 2009

Chrome for Mac and Linux mac-google-chrome-logosGoogle has released beta versions of its Chrome browser for Mac and Linux. Google makes clear that Chrome Brower is easy to install, and each extension runs in its own process to avoid crashing or significantly slowing down the browser.

Google first unveiled Chrome in September 2008 but it is only for Windows. Chrome for Mac and Linux were released in June, but they did not include Flash support and did not has any other required feature. Google takes great care to make Google Chrome a native application for Mac. Grabowski and Pinkerton said the Mac team was focused on delivering rock-solid depth in a few critical areas for the browser, rather than a breadth of feature that are rough around the edges.

For the Linux Rakowski said the team again focused on speed, stability, and security, but given that most engineers use Linux machines, Google wanted Chrome to be a high-performance browser that integrated well with the Linux ecosystem. Kegel and Martin warned that those who installed the less stable, dev channel version of Chrome for Linux should uninstall that version before downloading the beta version. Google has also made a beta version of extensions available for Chrome in Windows and Linux.

Intel’s New CPU With 48 cores on a single silicon chip which marks the future of cloud computing

December 3rd, 2009

Intel's New CPU With 48 cores on a single silicon chip which marks the future of cloud computingoriginalIntel’s New CPU With 48 cores on a single silicon chip which marks the future of cloud computing. Intel’s Tera-scale Computing Research Program contains 48 cores on a single silicon chip. Intel engineers envision this multi-core chip as the future of cloud computing. As all 48 cores of this postage stamp-sized chip use 125 watts at their maximum performance, the advent of similar chips could herald a new era of energy-efficient, smaller data centers, making cloud computing less expensive and more portable. Using only as much electricity as a single Intel processor, this experimental chip could enable future generations of laptops.

Intel plans on sharing 100 of these prototype chips with researchers in order to develop software specially honed for the 48-core chip, but details of the prototypes’ availability to industry and academic experts are yet to be released.

Applications for these chips include the rapid processing of images, allowing for new methods of interacting with computers with a camera, rather than with keyboards or mice. Virtual dance lessons and more intuitive controls for video games could become commonplace for laptops. With so much processing power available in a small area.

Current Internet speeds may drop over next year: Recent survey

November 3rd, 2009

Internet speedsThe Recent survey conducted by the European Commission found that of the 610 government, educational and other industry organizations questioned across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, just 17 per cent have upgraded to a new Internet addressing technique called IPv6.
These aren’t the Web address you type into a browser to surf to your favorite website, but rather the underlying Internet protocol addresses that denote individual devices connected to the Internet. These form the foundation for all online communications, from e-mail and web pages to voice chat and streaming video.
Due to this we’ll be down to our last tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of web addresses by the end of next year. New companies looking to establish a presence on the internet will have no option but to adopt the IPv6 address format.
Making the transition from the current system, called IPv4, to the IPv6 format is relatively straightforward, though it involves the purchase of new networking equipment. But support has been built into Windows and Macintosh computers for years.
Every day thousands of new devices ranging from massive web servers down to individual mobile phones go online and gobble up more combinations and permutations. The situation is critical for the future of the Internet economy.
As addresses run dry we will all feel the pinch: Internet speeds will drop and new connections and services will either be expensive or simply impossible to obtain. The IPv6 solution was agreed upon more than a decade ago, providing enough addresses for billions upon billions of devices as well as improving Internet phone and video calls, and possibly even helping to end e-mail spam.

some students reported problems installing the new OS once they downloaded it. As the weekend progressed, four separate issues surfaced, including Windows 7 installs getting hung up and corrupted download files. Two issues involved users trying to upgrade from a 32-bit operating system to Windows 7’s 64-bit version. Microsoft has posted information and solutions for these issues on this forum thread. Now getting Windows 7 on a netbook using a flash drive was possible before, but Microsoft’s new tool makes it that much easier. The new tool also fits into Microsoft’s goal of getting Windows 7 on as many netbooks as possible.

A good thing of the company’s revenue was attributed to Windows 7 pre-sales worth about $3 billion.

Windows 7 upgrade time is faster than Vista

September 13th, 2009

windows-7Microsoft said some in-place upgrades from Windows Vista to the new Windows 7 may take some users over 20 hours to complete. Chris Hernandez, who works in the Windows deployment team Said that the best that users can hope for is a 1 hour and 24 minute process. So-called clean installs, where the user overwrites an existing edition of Windows to end up with the OS, but no former data or applications, take less time: from 27 to 46 minutes.

Hernandez said the in-place upgrade times were obtained from lab machines in three different configurations: labeled low, mid-range and high-end — with three simulated users: a medium user, a heavy user and a super user. The profiles differed in the amount of data and the number of applications that were on the PC before the upgrade to Windows 7. The medium user profile, for example, assumed 70GB of data and 20 applications; the super user profile, on the other hand, contained 650GB of data and 40 applications.

One of the main goals with Windows 7 in general has been to be better than Vista. As part of the Windows Upgrade team we have tracked Windows 7 upgrade performance using Vista as our baseline comparison. The in-place upgrade from Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Windows 7 at least 5% faster than an in-place upgrade from Vista SP1 to a new copy of Vista SP1.

Windows 7 upgrade time is faster or equal within a 5% threshold to the Vista SP1 upgrade time.
