The IBM Green Power 7 chips, launched today which only use a quarter of the energy used by the Power 6, but this new products offer double the performance.

The Power 7 chips, which compete against Sparc and Niagara processors from Sun JAVA (now part of Oracle) and Hewlett-Packard’s Itanium chips, support the Unix, AIX, and Linux operating systems. IBM also unveiled four new mid-range servers, the first to feature Power 7 chips.

Increasing heap of IT equipment packed into corporate datacenters, firms have been wrestling with spiraling energy costs, prompting companies like IBM and Microsoft to beat an increasingly eco-friendly thump.

Google Chrome for Mac and Linux is Now available

Google has released beta versions of its Chrome browser for Mac and Linux. Google makes clear that Chrome Brower is easy to install, and each extension runs in its own process to avoid crashing or significantly slowing down the browser.

Google first unveiled Chrome in September 2008 but it is only for Windows. Chrome for Mac and Linux were released in June, but they did not include Flash support and did not has any other required feature. Google takes great care to make Google Chrome a native application for Mac. Grabowski and Pinkerton said the Mac team was focused on delivering rock-solid depth in a few critical areas for the browser, rather than a breadth of feature that are rough around the edges.

For the Linux Rakowski said the team again focused on speed, stability, and security, but given that most engineers use Linux machines, Google wanted Chrome to be a high-performance browser that integrated well with the Linux ecosystem. Kegel and Martin warned that those who installed the less stable, dev channel version of Chrome for Linux should uninstall that version before downloading the beta version. Google has also made a beta version of extensions available for Chrome in Windows and Linux.

Intel’s New CPU With 48 cores on a single silicon chip which marks the future of cloud computing. Intel’s Tera-scale Computing Research Program contains 48 cores on a single silicon chip. Intel engineers envision this multi-core chip as the future of cloud computing. As all 48 cores of this postage stamp-sized chip use 125 watts at their maximum performance, the advent of similar chips could herald a new era of energy-efficient, smaller data centers, making cloud computing less expensive and more portable. Using only as much electricity as a single Intel processor, this experimental chip could enable future generations of laptops.

Intel plans on sharing 100 of these prototype chips with researchers in order to develop software specially honed for the 48-core chip, but details of the prototypes’ availability to industry and academic experts are yet to be released.

Applications for these chips include the rapid processing of images, allowing for new methods of interacting with computers with a camera, rather than with keyboards or mice. Windows 7′s first weekend among the public looks like it was Microsoft’s most successful OS launch yet.
Microsoft offer deals to students looking to get a copy of Windows, and this time around was no exception. Microsoft offered a Windows 7 upgrade to students for $29.99. Students were able to download the discounted OS from a dedicated Website starting October 23rd 2009.

some students reported problems installing the new OS once they downloaded it. As the weekend progressed, four separate issues surfaced, including Windows 7 installs getting hung up and corrupted download files. Two issues involved users trying to upgrade from a 32-bit operating system to Windows 7′s 64-bit version. Microsoft has posted information and solutions for these issues on this forum thread. Now getting Windows 7 on a netbook using a flash drive was possible before, but Microsoft’s new tool makes it that much easier. The new tool also fits into Microsoft’s goal of getting Windows 7 on as many netbooks as possible.

Google’s announcement Chrome OS comes at an interesting time where Microsoft is poised to launch its new operating system Windows 7. Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010. The key aspects of Google Chrome OS will be Speed, simplicity and security.

The operating system, which will run on an open source license, was a natural extension of its Chrome browser. Google already has an operating system for mobile phones called Android which can also be used to run on netbooks.

Last year Google launched the Chrome browser, which it said was designed for people who live on the web – searching for information, checking e-mail, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends.

India’s star-studded batting order failed yet again as they could not chase down 131 runs that would have spared them the ignominy of finishing their Super Eight campaign without a single win to show.

In the end, 118 was all they could manage losing eight wickets.
