The Recent survey conducted by the European Commission found that of the 610 government, educational and other industry organizations questioned across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, just 17 per cent have upgraded to a new Internet addressing technique called IPv6.
These aren’t the Web address you type into a browser to surf to your favorite website, but rather the underlying Internet protocol addresses that denote individual devices connected to the Internet. These form the foundation for all online communications, from e-mail and web pages to voice chat and streaming video.
Due to this we’ll be down to our last tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of web addresses by the end of next year. New companies looking to establish a presence on the internet will have no option but to adopt the IPv6 address format.
Making the transition from the current system, called IPv4, to the IPv6 format is relatively straightforward, though it involves the purchase of new networking equipment. But support has been built into Windows and Macintosh computers for years.
Every day thousands of new devices ranging from massive web servers down to individual mobile phones go online and gobble up more combinations and permutations. The situation is critical for the future of the Internet economy.
As addresses run dry we will all feel the pinch: Internet speeds will drop and new connections and services will either be expensive or simply impossible to obtain. The IPv6 solution was agreed upon more than a decade ago, providing enough addresses for billions upon billions of devices as well as improving Internet phone and video calls, and possibly even helping to end e-mail spam.

Windows 7’s first weekend among the public looks like it was Microsoft’s most successful OS launch yet.
Microsoft offer deals to students looking to get a copy of Windows, and this time around was no exception. Microsoft offered a Windows 7 upgrade to students for $29.99. Students were able to download the discounted OS from a dedicated Website starting October 23rd 2009.
some students reported problems installing the new OS once they downloaded it. As the weekend progressed, four separate issues surfaced, including Windows 7 installs getting hung up and corrupted download files. Two issues involved users trying to upgrade from a 32-bit operating system to Windows 7’s 64-bit version. Microsoft has posted information and solutions for these issues on this forum thread. Now getting Windows 7 on a netbook using a flash drive was possible before, but Microsoft’s new tool makes it that much easier. The new tool also fits into Microsoft’s goal of getting Windows 7 on as many netbooks as possible.
A good thing of the company’s revenue was attributed to Windows 7 pre-sales worth about $3 billion.

Microsoft said some in-place upgrades from Windows Vista to the new Windows 7 may take some users over 20 hours to complete. Chris Hernandez, who works in the Windows deployment team Said that the best that users can hope for is a 1 hour and 24 minute process. So-called clean installs, where the user overwrites an existing edition of Windows to end up with the OS, but no former data or applications, take less time: from 27 to 46 minutes.
Hernandez said the in-place upgrade times were obtained from lab machines in three different configurations: labeled low, mid-range and high-end — with three simulated users: a medium user, a heavy user and a super user. The profiles differed in the amount of data and the number of applications that were on the PC before the upgrade to Windows 7. The medium user profile, for example, assumed 70GB of data and 20 applications; the super user profile, on the other hand, contained 650GB of data and 40 applications.
One of the main goals with Windows 7 in general has been to be better than Vista. As part of the Windows Upgrade team we have tracked Windows 7 upgrade performance using Vista as our baseline comparison. The in-place upgrade from Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Windows 7 at least 5% faster than an in-place upgrade from Vista SP1 to a new copy of Vista SP1.
Windows 7 upgrade time is faster or equal within a 5% threshold to the Vista SP1 upgrade time.

Microsoft will likely announce that Windows 7 has reached release to manufacturing (RTM) status on Wednesday. An analyst with directions on Microsoft Michael Cherry said that RTM almost seems like a non-event and also stressed that he had no special knowledge of when Microsoft would declare Windows 7 finished. But it’s got to be any day now.
The company earlier pledge that it would move the new operating system into its final pre-sale phase, sometime in the second half of July 2009. The importance of RTM has ebbed since Windows Vista.
Microsoft’s hardware and software partners will receive copies of Windows 7 RTM starting Aug 16 or Aug 23 2009, depending on which partner program they’re assigned. OEMs or original equipment manufacturers in other words, computer makers will have Windows 7 in hand approximately two days after Microsoft’s announcement.
Consumers and other customers will have their first shot at Windows 7 on its official launch day Oct. 22 2009.
LeBlanc also confirmed that Microsoft will sell a three-license “family pack” upgrade from earlier editions of the OS to Windows 7 Home Premium, but did not flesh out that notice with pricing or timing information. Reports have circulated for two weeks that Microsoft would reprise the multi-license upgrade pack it offered for Windows Vista; at least one reseller has posted the suggested list price as $149.99 on its Web site.
Volume licensing customers, normally large organizations and companies will be able to grab Windows 7 RTM starting Aug 7 if they have an existing Software Assurance plan or if they do not have they will have it on Sept 1 2009.

Google’s announcement Chrome OS comes at an interesting time where Microsoft is poised to launch its new operating system Windows 7. Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010. The key aspects of Google Chrome OS will be Speed, simplicity and security.
The operating system, which will run on an open source license, was a natural extension of its Chrome browser. Google already has an operating system for mobile phones called Android which can also be used to run on netbooks.
Last year Google launched the Chrome browser, which it said was designed for people who live on the web – searching for information, checking e-mail, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends.
Google won’t charge for the Chrome operating system, Schmidt said it could easily pay off by driving down the cost of computers so people can afford to buy more machines and surf the Web more often. Google Chrome OS will be aimed not just at laptops but also at desktops for those who spend a lot of time on the web.

India ended their miserable Twenty20 World Cup campaign on an embarrassing note with a 12-run defeat against South Africa –their third straight loss in the tournament– in a low-scoring Super Eight match here.
India’s star-studded batting order failed yet again as they could not chase down 131 runs that would have spared them the ignominy of finishing their Super Eight campaign without a single win to show.
In the end, 118 was all they could manage losing eight wickets.
This was after India’s disciplined bowlers — eight of them were pressed into action — had restricted South Africa to 130 for five on a sluggish track, last night.
Going by their start, a defeat never looked like a possibility for India. With Gambhir wasting precious little time in imposing himself and his aggression rubbing off on Rohit, India were off to a flying start till the mid-innings collapsed happened
Gautam Gambhir (21) and Rohit Sharma (29) gave India a strong start but it was Yuvraj Singh’s run-a-ball 25 that actually rekindled India’s hopes of a win in their swansong tie before the defending champions faltered.
